In the beginning...

How do these things start? Maybe they don't. In any case I can't remember. I know how and when it ended...but that's for another day. Maybe they just evolve. Perhaps they are given form through many thoughts, conversations, reflections, revisions and discussion. However it started, I do know that at least two years ago the idea of crossing the Arctic Circle in Norway on motorbikes had taken form. How it progressed will be the story of this Blog....

First there was a tricycle, then a two-wheeler and a racer and now a motor bike (otherwise know as a mid-life-crisis bike!)............

We're sitting comfortably, wine in hand, eagerly awaiting the first instalment............

* Thanks, John, for a riveting start to an account of an adventure, wherein the reader is
enticed to follow the narrative and to share your trip. You definitely earned our attention.
You present a very interesting “voice”, as they say in literary criticism: self-deprecating,
whimsical, personal and personable. Your blog --if the middle and end are as good as the
beginning-- could serve as the source of a great “road movie”, with two heroes battling
nature and ferry-schedules to achieve a goal. The theme is “the quest”, the search for the
Holy Grail, or -- in the case of the classic motorcycle film EASY RIDER-- some craic.
Frodo and Sam confront the Arctic...and the lack of a Starbucks!
**Here is a picked nit: apparently you have to adjust for refraction, the finite size of the
disc of the sun, AND the height of the eye above the surface of the earth, when defining
the Arctic Circle in terms of the midnight sun. These corrections, according to the
Wikipedia, can amount to about 50 minutes of latitude. I applaud your due diligence in
defining terms and warding off criticism.
***We expect to cross the Arctic Circle next month but we will probably sleep right
through this passage, as the Maasdam cruises in the east and south of Grimsey Island
during the wee hours of the morning.
****An excellent blog, filled with humor and information. Thanks. Keep up the good
work. You are almost as skilled as your son. (Who would play your role in the movie version of this escapade, John?)
